Honourable Deputy Minister Maureen Hinda, Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation

Distinguished Guests

It is a privilege to witness this week how Namibia, a country bom of the Sun, Desert and Ocean, embraced her full independence 25 years ago as a result of the solidarity of the United Nations, is successfully hosting the 10th session of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee of UNESCO in Windhoek.

We are pleased to observe the growing voice of Africa asserting itself in international relations and this meeting is another testimony to that fact. Our Namibian friends raise the voice of Africa higher in UNESCO these days. -

Election of Mr. Stanley Mutumba Simataa, Deputy Minister of Information and Communication Technology of the Republic of Namibia, as President of the 38th session of the General Conference of UNESCO and election of H.E. Trudie Amulungu as President of the 10th session of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Committee show the commitment of Namibia to UNESCO.

Turkey and Namibia have long standing relations of friendship dating back to early 1960’s, years of Namibia's quest for freedom and independence. In this context, Turkey co-sponsored the “UN Security Council Resolution No. 2145” dated 1966 as the only member of the Western Group in the UN. Turkey was also one of the founding members of the “UN Council for Namibia

Turkey’s approach toward Africa is one of an equal partnership. We will remain committed to support the institutional capacities of the African Union and other regional organizations in achieving progress on the priority areas which will consolidate African ownership of African matters.

With its 13 offices in Africa, the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency, TİKA, carries out development assistance projects throughout the continent. TİKA’s programs that were developed specifically for Africa such as “The Agricultural Development Program of Africa”, “The African Health Program” and “The Vocational Training Program of Africa”, indicate the importance that we place on the continent. The 11th Office of TIKA was established in Windhoek last year covering the entire South African Region, namely, Angola, Botswana, South Africa, Swaziland and Lesotho.

Turkish Airlines flies total 279 destinations in 110 countries. Out of this number it connects Africa to the rest of the World by flying to 46 destinations in the Continent. We are working hard to include Windhoek to these destinations.
